Vermejo offers guests an excellent opportunity to observe an unusually diverse array of wildlife throughout the year. From migratory eagles and waterfowl in the spring and fall, to frequent sightings of bear in mid-summer, Vermejo is truly unique in the quantity of observable wildlife.

There is nothing quite like Vermejo Park Ranch. Consisting of 588,000 acres situated high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of northern New Mexico, it ranges from high prairie grasslands at 6400’ to above timberline at nearly 13,000’. Vermejo offers a diversity of ecosystems with resulting flora and fauna found almost nowhere else in the West in such pristine condition.

Deer and elk are commonly seen from the lodge, mornings and evenings. For those willing to travel to different areas of the ranch, the numbers and type of wildlife increase. Bison, coyotes, bobcats, pronghorn, prairie dogs and bear are seen regularly.

Over 180 different species of birds have been identified. The cougar population on the ranch is good and a few fortunate guests have observed this very secretive cat.

Vermejo’s expanse and diversity of habitats provides those interested in wildlife observation an opportunity that is usually found only in our national parks. This great diversity of wildlife along with excellent accommodations and dining offer those wishing to view and photograph wildlife an opportunity without equal.
